What this means in practice

Housing providers, real estate brokers, and salespersons in New York may not refuse to sell, rent, or show a property, or treat anyone differently in the terms of a transaction, on the basis of a protected class. That includes steering, which means directing a buyer toward or away from a neighborhood based on the makeup of the people who live there. If you ask John Tiburzi what kind of people live in a town, you will get an answer about taxes, schools, commute times, and flood maps, because those are the questions a licensee may lawfully answer.

If you believe you were treated unfairly

You can file a complaint with the New York State Division of Human Rights, the New York State Department of State Division of Licensing Services, or the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. Filing a complaint costs nothing and does not require a lawyer.
